Watchmen

In the book Watchmen, superheroes emerge in the United States in the 1940s to help win the Vietnam War. The Vietnam war occurred from 1959 to 1975, in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The war started because communist North Vietnam wanted South Vietnam to be communist as well. The United States was allied with South Vietnam, and entered the war to prevent the South from being taken over. The Vietcong fought a guerrilla war in South Vietnam against the governments army and the United States. In April 1975 North Vietnam captured Saigon, and the following year the North and South were reunified. In terms of fatalities, the war exacted 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides. In Watchmen the six main characters(The Comedian, Dr. Manhatted, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Rorschach, and the Silk Spectre), win the Vietnam War for the united States, and create tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union throughout the Cold War. One of the main images in the book is a blood smeared smiley face, which was taken from the Galle Crater on Mars. The blood stained smiley face symbolizes a recurring motif throughout the book.
